Barium Swallow
The barium swallow test is an x-ray test that studies the upper part of your digestive tract, the esophagus (the tube that carries food from the mouth to the stomach). We use a contrast agent called barium, which is a thick, white liquid.
We offer Barium-Swallow exam under fluoroscopy to study the real time function and structure of your throat.

Clarke's Barium Swallow Procedure
The barium swallow test uses a video imaging technique to observe the passage of barium fluid into your esophagus. You will need to drink a thick white liquid, and as you swallow, fluoroscopy provides a live view of the movement of the barium. You may be asked to change positions to get different views. Before the exam, you may not eat or drink for a few hours. After the test, your stools may be white for a day or two, this is normal because you are eliminating the barium. Drink plenty of water to help flush it out and avoid becoming constipated.

PRESCRIPTION AND RAMQ CARD REQUIRED.
Please present a valid prescription and your original RAMQ card for each exam. Without a RAMQ card, fees will apply.
