    Osteodensitometry

Osteodensitometry, or bone density scan is a safe and painless X-ray test that measures the mineral density of your bones. It is an essential tool for detecting osteoporosis, a disease that weakens bones and increases the risk of fractures. This non-invasive test assesses your skeletal strength and helps your doctor determine your risk of developing fractures.

    Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a bone disease characterized by deterioration of bone tissue, causing bones to become very thin and fragile over time. Although osteoporosis is more common among patients over 50, the disease can affect people of all ages.

    Did you know?

Osteoporosis affects more than 2.3 million Canadians and causes more than 80% of fractures after age 50.

Bone Density Scan procedure at Clarke

Bone densitometry is a radiological examination lasting approximately 15 to 20 minutes (allow 30 to 60 minutes in total) which only requires simple preparation: report any pregnancy, avoid contrast examinations in the preceding 14 days, stop calcium and vitamin D supplements 48 hours before, eat normally on the day and remove jewelry and metal objects; Wearing a gown is required.

During the exam, you will lie still while an x-ray machine analyzes the density of your bones (mainly hips and spine), and additional x-rays will be taken afterwards.
