GASTRO-INTESTINAL STUDIES

Clarke Medical Imaging Center provides G.I examinations covered by RAMQ

You need a referral from your doctor and your Quebec Health insurance card;

Please advise our staff if any possibility of pregnancy;

Do not eat or drink anything after midnight the day before your test.

You will be asked to remove some or all of your clothes, jewellery, metal objects that might interfere with the x-ray images and to wear a gown during the exam.

After the test, a regular diet can be resumed.  The barium may cause white discoloration of your stools, usually for no more than 48 to 72 hours after the procedure. It is important to drink large quantities of fluid after the procedure to help eliminate the barium. Sometimes the barium can cause temporary constipation, which is usually treated by an over-the-counter laxative. Drinking large quantities of fluids for several days following the test can also help.
